Home remedies for toothaches
If your toothache is caused by a temporary irritation, it should stop
in 1 or 2 days but if it is caused by a dental problem it won’t go away
on its own. Your dentist will diagnose and treat your toothache. But for
temporary relief at home, you can do the following:
Rinse with warm saltwater. This is helpful if your pain is caused by
trapped food or debris. The saltwater will loosen food and debris
between your teeth. Saltwater also acts as a disinfectant and reduces
inflammation. Use a half teaspoonful of salt in a glass of warm water
and rinse your mouth thoroughly.
Rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide. A hydrogen peroxide (3%
solution) helps to reduce inflammation and pain. Dilute the hydrogen
peroxide with equal amounts of water and rinse thoroughly. Don’t swallow
it.
Apply a cold compress. For swelling and pain, apply a cold compress
of ice wrapped in a towel to the painful area for 20-minute periods.
Repeat every few hours. You may also use a hot pack.
Pain medications. Over-the-counter pain medications can reduce pain
and inflammation. Do not use pain medications consistently, they should
give you temporary relief. If your pain is ongoing, see your
dentist.
Toothache can get in the way of your normal activity. While it may be
temporary, don’t rule it out on your own especially if you recently had
a dental injury. Try the home remedies for temporary relief and visit
your dentist for a correct diagnosis. If you still have questions about
