Wisdom Teeth Removal in Indianapolis
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth removal involves a surgical procedure to remove one or
more wisdom teeth that are impacted. Wisdom teeth are the last adult
teeth at the back, one in each corner. The term impacted wisdom teeth is
used to describe wisdom teeth that are trapped under the gum line or
failed to emerge correctly.
Possible problems with impacted wisdom teeth
If your wisdom teeth are impacted, it is good to get them removed.
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a few problems for you including:
-
Pain
-
Trapping food and debris (This can give you bad breath.)
-
Gum disease (periodontal disease)
-
Tooth decay in a partially emerged wisdom tooth
-
Damage to a nearby tooth or surrounding bone if the wisdom teeth
emerge at an angle. -
Development of a fluid-filled sac (cyst) around the wisdom
tooth -
Complications with orthodontic treatments to straighten other
teeth
How wisdom teeth are removed
Your dentist will perform an X-ray to check the condition of the
impacted wisdom teeth under the gums.
Depending on the results, they may do the removal procedure or refer
you to a specialist such as an endodontist.
During extraction, you will be given a local anesthetic injection to
numb the area.
Your dentist or endodontist will then make a cut on the gum and use
dental tools to widen the tooth socket and rock the tooth back and forth
to loosen it before pulling it out with forceps.
Recovery
Recovery shouldn’t take long if you follow your dentist’s advice.
Don’t smoke or drink during the recovery period. You will feel better in
3 days but you may need to rest at least for one week depending on
whether the procedure was simple or surgical.
